Morucci’s may be tucked away a half-mile from downtown, but it’s too well loved to be a best-kept secret. The sandwiches are worth the wait, which newcomers should keep in mind when they’re calculating just how far they are from the counter (think Disney World). Find a takeout menu, because it will take you a while to settle on a sandwich — though if you can resist the call of bacon, which often perfumes the room, you have stronger willpower than we do. (Try sandwich number #14, by the way.) Most of the customers come with a number in mind, from #00 for freshly roasted turkey breast through #15 for avocado, sprouts, and cheese. Numbers 6 through 6 3/4, which start with fresh mozzarella, tomatoes, and basil and then gild the lily with things like prosciutto, have earned cult status in Walnut Creek. When you order your sandwich, request some tinfoil or plastic wrap with it, because you’re taking half of that puppy home for dinner.
