cat supplies, it’s clear this downtown San Leandro pet supply store
caters to a much wider audience. Particularly in the spring and summer
months when they get fresh shipments of baby chicks. Loads of them. And
depending on who’s doing the ordering, you can pick up a number of
different varieties from Americaunas (blue/green egg layers), Leghorn
(great for meat), Rhode Island Reds (great egg layers), and dozens
more. You can take home a handful of little, feathery fluff balls,
ranging from $3.99 to $4.25 each, to start your own backyard flock.
There’s no guarantee on “sexing” (determining whether a chick is male
or female), but the guys at Mike’s are pretty good at it. Plus, the
staff, led by manager Joe, is very helpful and up-to-date on most pet
and livestock issues.
