.Best Eastern European Cuisine: A peek past the Iron Curtain

DJ's Bistro

If not for the lack of cigarette smoke, you’d almost think you were at a bistro in Prague. Mitteleuropeans from all over the East Bay travel to DJ’s for a pint of Czechvar lager and a taste of home — paprika-hued goulash, sauerbraten with houskové knedlíky (bread dumplings), Moravian roast pork. Owner Jerry Sedivy, who is from the Czech Republic, claims that 80 percent or so of his customers are from Europe. And if you admit to speaking a little German, you may never hear another English word from the waitress. And for modest prices, entrées such as the wienerschnitzel and beef stroganoff are preceded by salads of cucumber pickles, sweet pickled green beans, and kidney beans, all dressed in a sweet-and-sour sour cream and dill dressing. Prosit.
