Vicki Brooks, Reel Blondes: The Bald and the Beautiful

From the most unlikely spot for theater in the East Bay come the most stunning costumes, the costumes without which there would be no show: Victoria’s Hair on Stage Salon in Danville, home of the long-running cabaret extravaganza Reel Blondes. In its twelfth year, Reel Blondes came through again with the new and phenomenally silly The Bald and the Beautiful, a bunch of highly altered pop songs and dances held together by the thinnest of story lines and the wildest costumes: scantily dressed leprechauns, pirates, crocodiles, and pigs; a hairy tutu-busting Tinkerbell; disco-dancing fools; and women in sequined chadors. That’s not even counting the boxes. Oh, the boxes. Vicki Brooks, who also produces the show, dressed up members of her cast as an electrical plug, a can of pears, a box of diapers, and a box of Cheez-Its, among a great many other things. Many of those other things can be seen arrayed along the ceiling, a rogues’ gallery of past costume triumphs and reason enough to visit the Reel Blondes the next time they fly in from whatever glittery alternate dimension they occupy.
