.Best Alternative Healer: Altruism for mind and body

Laura Tabet, CST

Tucked away on Piedmont Avenue is the place for diving deep into your soul. While most body workers, like chiropractors, massage therapists, and acupuncturists, operate in just the physical plane to achieve their goals, Oakland’s Laura Tabet flips those trusted methods on their heads. The thirty-year-old alternative healer, who is getting her master’s degree from the Institute of Imaginal Studies in Petaluma, employs craniosacral therapy, intuitive energy work, symbols, and guided visualization. And the results are literally mind- and body-altering. A two-hour session that focused on emotional work began with a thirty-minute, closed-eye grounding exercise. Next come the meat and potatoes: an hour of dreamlike revelations atop a massage table. Lying down, the client is treated to extremely subtle pressure along the feet, stomach, and of course the head, to prompt communication between the brain, body, and Tabet. Afterward, a half hour of reflection leaves you feeling clear and honest with yourself and your mind. And of course, the session-ending hug is just what the alternative healer ordered. Tabet works with a large range of ailments such as spiritual and emotional inquiries, autoimmune disease, depression, chronic pain, children with ADD, and trauma. She explains that listening to our bodies can help us better care for ourselves, adding simply and without pretense, “All we need to heal is within our reach.”
