.8:45 a.m. Sunday: Best God-Given View

Unitarian Universalist Church of Berkeley

Maybe speaking in tongues isn’t your cup of tea. Sometimes all you need to have a religious experience is a great view. The Unitarian church off Moeser Lane in the hills above El Cerrito sits on a spot of real estate that has surely been blessed by God, Allah, and Yahweh. The quite nonmonotheistic thing about this view is that it evokes the idea (gasp!) that San Francisco is not the center of the universe. You are. The Golden Gate Bridge is front and center, with Marin’s rolling hills and the sleeping Indian princess silhouette of Mt. Tamalpais off to the right. The bay spreads out before you with dots of whitecaps and sailboats if it’s windy. The port of Oakland and the expanse of your own bayside cities seem much more impressive than the glimmer of Rice-a-Roni in the distance. At night, if conditions are right, it can seem as if you’re looking over the East Bay from a hot air balloon. Sunday morning service is at 10:45 a.m., but get there as soon as the fog lifts for your personal meditation session.
