.Surviving 22 Gunshots

In light of the series of Richmond-related shootings in late March and early April, this video looks at the personal toll facing Kamari Ridgle — the victim of a drive-by shooting in North Richmond last year.

In late-May 2010, fifteen-year-old Ridgle was walking on Silver Avenue in North Richmond when a car approached him from behind and fired off more than two dozen rounds. Ridgle was struck 22 times. He managed to make a call on his cellphone for help; his friends came and drove him to Doctors Medical Center in San Pablo before he was flown by helicopter to John Muir Medical Center in Walnut Creek.

Two weeks earlier, on May 13, 2010, North Richmond had witnessed the deadliest single incident in the community in more than a decade. Three men were killed and a fourth wounded in a drive-by shooting just a few blocks from the other incident.

Ridgle has been recovering in hospitals for nearly a year. But next month he may finally get to go home for good. This short video looks at Ridgle’s recovery and his attempt to come to terms with the shooting.
