Forget your prior notions of prefabricated homes. Their reputation just moved from trashy to intrepid. Zeta Communities, a company that manufactures zero-energy prefabricated homes will start productions in a few months at their factory loctated in McClellan, CA. Zeta was able to use a demonstration home located in Oakland to generate enough interest and funding to enable the opening of their factory. According to their website, the houses will operate at “net zero” energy. “That means over the course of a year Zeta buildings’ energy production and occupant consumption of energy nets to zero.” Based on the photos I’ve seen the residential models look pretty nice. They are split level with two bedrooms and a deck. Unless you’re the vampire type you’ll probably appreciate the ample and efficient use of windows to maximize the value of ambient light. It looks like a quality rig to me. Theirs is part of a larger effort to meet the goals of the Global Warming Solutions Act of 2006 which mandates that California must reduce its greenhouse gas emissions to 1990 levels by 2020. Considering that the residential sector consumes 21% of all the energy produced in the country this could be a big towards meeting that goal.
