.Oakland Helps Berkeley Keep Bayer

The City of Oakland helped the City of Berkeley keep biotech giant Bayer HeatlhCare from leaving town and laying off about 1,400 people. According to the Chron, Oakland agreed to extend its already-established enterprise zone into Berkeley, thereby allowing Bayer to save about $6 million in tax breaks on its $100 million modernization plan. The pharmaceutical giant had contemplated moving elsewhere to cut costs, until Berkeley officials decided to ask Oakland for help. The move was excellent example of how cities can help one another to benefit the region.
