The Oakland Police Department held a press conference yesterday to report that the number of police-officer-involved shootings in the city has dropped significantly this year. According to the Chron, Oakland police have shot two people in 2009, a significant decrease from the 11 officer-involved shootings last year and the 10 in 2007. The drop is good news, and Oakland Police have reason to pat themselves on the back, but city cops are still on pace to shoot four people this year, which from our perspective, is still too high.
