Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger says he welcomes a debate on legalizing and taxing marijuana in California, according to the Chron. The governor’s comments came one week after an ABC News/Washington Post poll found that 46 percent of Americans want to legalize small amounts of pot for personal use, and a Field Poll revealed that 56 percent of Californians want to legalize pot and tax it. Assemblyman Tom Ammiano of San Francisco has a bill in the state legislature that would do just that. He estimates that the state could reap $1.3 billion a year in marijuana tax proceeds. Let’s hope that the Schwarzenegger’s comments mean that Ammiano’s bill will get a full public airing.
