Is the former Oakland city manager going to run for mayor, or not? In Thursday’s Chron, it certainly looked that way. He told reporter Christopher Heredia: “We’re working on a plan of entry” into the mayor’s race. “I do think that Oakland needs fresh executive leadership.” But then in yesterday’s Chron and the Trib, Bobb backpedaled. First, he told Chip Johnson: “I can’t be distracted from my work (in Detroit), but my contract ends in a year and my plans are to return to the Bay Area. I want to weigh all my opportunities and running for mayor is an option.” And then he went even further, telling the Trib’s Cecily Burt: “At some point in my life I have to weigh all my options, when my contract (in Detroit) is up. I don’t know if it would be too late. There are certain realities, I know what it takes (to run for elective office). But this is too premature.” So, Mr. Bobb, what’s it going to be? Why tell Heredia one thing, and then back off the next day? If you really do plan to wait until early next year to make up your mind, then it probably will be too late. We all know that Don Perata is going to have a war chest by then.
