.Chauncey Bailey, One Year Later

This weekend marked the one-year anniversary of the murder of Oakland journalist Chauncey Bailey, and former members of Your Black Muslim Bakery rallied outside the old San Pablo Avenue headquarters to demand fresh investigations into police handling of Yusuf Bey IV and the homicide investigation. According to the Trib, Saleem Bey, the former bakery associate whose tips started Bailey on the bakery story, told the crowd that police deliberately let Yusuf Bey IV run the organization into the ground, even though there was a bumper crop of criminal charges hanging over his head. He also demanded that Sergeant Derwin Longmire, a homicide detective that has been friendly with the baker for years, be removed from the case. (Longmire’s involvement is truly a black mark for the department, we gotta say.) A few miles south, at the site of Bailey’s killing, friends and family gathered to remember him and pray that they can recover from this loss.
