By a surprisingly slim majority, the reporters and editorial staff of the Bay Area News Group, which is composed of the Oakland Tribune, the Contra Costa Times, and numerous smaller papers around the Bay Area, have voted to be represented by a union. BANG execs gerrymandered Trib employees out of union membership when the company bought the CoCo Times, but now they face a united union membership at all papers in the region. The CoCo Times played the story pretty straight, considering how disappointed management must be with the results. BANG-East Bay publisher John Armstrong bemoaned the results, declaring, “My concern is this will usher in a period of uncertainty. I fear this will create divisiveness in our newsroom.” Cry us a river, John.
