.Oakland Students Vanishing, Schools May Close

Grim word from the Oakland Unified School District, courtesy of the Trib. District Chief Financial Officer Leon Glaster has announced that up to 17 schools may have to be closed, due to declining enrollment. In the last eight years, the student population has declined by no fewer than 15,000 students, or 27 percent. As a result, state funds are drying up, and the district will have to concentrate its students in fewer schools if it wants to stay alive. The district has already closed fifteen schools, but the bleeding just keeps going on. As blue collar residents move out to the poorer suburbs of the Central Valley, and childless tech professionals continue to move in, this trend is only likely to continue.
