.Hiring Cops Is Super Expensive

For the past year, citizens and business groups have criticized Mayor Ron Dellums for not hiring enough police. On Tuesday, Police Chief Wayne Tucker revealed how expensive recruiting and training new cops can be. According to today’s San Francisco Chronicle, Tucker said it will cost the city $22.7 million to attract, train, and hire 130 new officers. Tucker said OPD needs that many new hires to offset the growing number of retirements from the force. The $22.7 million includes $7.7 million that Dellums asked the City Council last night to boost the city’s force to 803 officers by the end of the year. The council, however, put off making a decision about the mayor’s ambitious plan for at least two weeks.
