.Oakland Mayor Ron Dellums’ Son Denied Parole

The same day Ron Dellums was celebrating his inauguration as Oakland’s mayor, his son went before the state parole board yesterday. Tip Kindel, a spokesman for the board, says that Michael Dellums was denied parole for at least one more year because he still poses a safety risk to the public. Dellums is serving a life sentence for murdering someone in 1979 over $20 worth of marijuana. The younger Dellums has repeatedly been denied parole over the years.

Ron Dellums doesn’t like to publicly talk about his wayward son, who was born after he and his first wife got divorced. Last we heard, the mayor won’t talk to Chronicle columnist Chip Johnson ever since he wrote about his relationship or lack thereof with Michael.

Today’s Bay City News story cited court records from Dellums Jr.’s murder trial that say the former congressman “has not been a major figure in Michael’s life.”
