.Absentee Totals Expected Today

The outcome of at least three very close races should be decided today when the Alameda County Registrar of Voters finishes tallying absentee ballots. Registrar staff spent the weekend counting about 60,000 absentees from throughout the county in a marathon session. Spokesman Guy Ashley said Registrar Dave MacDonald expects to post the results about midday. Registrar staffers counted the “lion’s share” of the absentees, which had arrived on Election Day by mail and at polling places, Ashley said. The only ballots left to count are those that were “damaged or marked incorrectly,” he said.

The tight races expected to be affected by the absentees are Berkeley City Council District 7; Pleasanton mayor; and AC Transit Director, Ward 3. In Berkeley, liberal incumbent Kriss Worthington leads challenger George Beier, a moderate, by just 131 votes. Pleasanton Mayor Jennifer Hosterman is trailing Councilman Steve Brozosky by 120 votes. And for the AC Transit seat, Alameda City Councilman Tony Daysog is losing to attorney Elsa Ortiz by only 53 votes.
